Delayed & Selective Vaccination Schedule
This schedule mostly follows Dr. Sears' as set out in "The Vaccine Book". I credit VeggieMommy for the original schedule. We may be tweaking it a bit more...

DTaP - 2,6,12,18 months (booster at 4 years). (Only Daptecel brand with no cow extract and a smaller dose of the pertussis component.) If he has any reaction stronger than a mild fever after any of those, we will stop after whichever shot that caused it.

Prevnar and HIB - 9,12,18,24 months. Same thing as above if he has a reaction...

IPV - 9,12,24 months (booster at 4 years) if we do it. Same thing about a reaction...

Mumps - 12 months (by itself)

Rubella - 2 years (by itself)

Measles - 3 years (by itself)

(boosters at 5 for MMR after titers have been checked)

Hep B (and possibly A)- probably start at 2 1/2

Varicella/Chickenpox - not doing until grade school or older if he doesn't get them on his own

Rotavirus - not doing at all

Flu shot - not doing at all

We will also make sure he is completely healthy before allowing him to have any shots and we will also up his vitamin intake for a few days before and after each one to help give his immune system a boost.

This is totally the schedule we were going to do until we found we might have to do international travel at a moment's notice (H's mom was diagnosed w/stage IV breast cancer, which has now miraculously retreated with just hormone therapy). Then I caved and pretty much said "Yeah, give him all of it." But then, he's so thin and tends toward dehydration that I have an absolute horror of him getting sick as he'll be very likely to need IV fluid and possibly caloric supplementation of some kind, and then we're in hospital + secondary infection land, and, well.... I'm babbling. I'll stop now.

Alexander got a big red swollen leg and a 24 hour fever from the DTaP and barfed a couple of times, both of the first 2 times he got the vaccine. Third time was a fever + a little soreness. It felt absolutely awful for me and I very nearly didn't go back for more, but then a friend of ours mentioned "Oh, I've got whooping cough, you might not want to come any closer with the baby."

This stuff is *hard*, yo.

That pertussis... My midwife/doc told us that's the one you really have to worry about when they're little. These decisions are all so individual, but unfortunately public health policy is pretty cookie-cutter!

We did the DTaP w/Xav and he was Mr. Crankypants for 2 days. Poor booboo.

i did all the shots i was told to do and connor is fine. just so you know. :) never had any issues at all. should you give babies vitamins? i've never heard that much about it. obviously if they are lacking in something but in general i never thought about it.

i also refuse the flu shot. all we are doing is creating a bigger scarier virus with things like that. i understand for the weak, ill, and/or older people but i think the average person does not need one. all i ever hear are people that got really sick because they inflicted themself with it.

connor turns 11 soon and has not had chickenpox yet and it worries me. i know the older they get the worse it can be.

I know there are a lot of kids that get them all at once and are totally fine. There are some that get really sick, though. If X is going to be one of the "sick" ones (hopefully not!), I feel better about him being a little older. Also, he was so cranky after the first shot we gave him, that I'd rather space it out a little!

The flu shot is almost always stabilized in thimerisol, which has mercury in it. I really don't want to put heavy metals in my kid. And they can only guess on which strain of flu is going to hit the public that year, so very often the flu shot is ineffective because it was for a different strain!

Are you getting Connor the shot for chicken pox? I rememeber having it at 8 and it sucked but wasn't really that big a deal... I hear if you're an adult it can be really horrible.

wouldn't you be cranky after getting poked at?!??! :)

ya know, it's been a long time since connor has had a regular doctor check up. he hasn't needed any shots for a while. pretty much once he got in to school he was good. i know there are some that need to be updated but i don't know if he needs any yet. i think maybe around 12-ish.
as for the chicken pox i'm not sure at what age i should consider a vaccine for him. i would have to check into it, ask a doctor, etc, etc.
