Hey, they can all share a room now. [07 Nov 2009|05:58pm]

Today is the kind of day that, if it were not NaBloPoMo*, I would just take off from blogging. Today has been full – of activity, of emotion, of cooking and laughing and crafting – and sitting down to condense any of it seems like time that could be spent elsewhere, but alas, it is November.

So, here is a little collage of inspiration for the girls’ room. Moving may be months away, but I can dream, right?

Girls' room inspiration

Let's play...when do you think I ovulated? :D

My Fertility Friend chart! With temps on CD 9, 10, and 16 disturbed, because on 9 and 10 I had been drinking (which doesn't always affect my temp, but I thought it did this time) and on 16 I was so sleepy I didn't know if I even put the thermometer in. :X (I temp vaginally.)

My TCOYF chart! (Hope this works.) With no temps disturbed. I set it to temps only but the new online software is wonky so I think it's still evaluating my CM, which is not all that consistent. Fixed it.

So, what do you think? Thanks in advance!

overlock vs. overedge and some help, please? [07 Nov 2009|05:50pm]

Hi all:

So I haven't seriously picked up sewing in years, but now is the time, I say! I have a pattern I want to work on, but the first step is stumping me (I know... not a good sign, right?) But I won't let it deter me: I know you guys can help me through!

The pattern tells me to: "Overlock all edges. Do not trim off any of the straight edges. On the handles' curved edges, trim off the 5/8" seam allowance"

First of all, I don't have a serger/overlock machine. My machine does have an "overedge" stitch, however. My research on the internet tells me that I can use this, I think...

So for my purposes, it seems that overlocking here just keeps the edges from fraying up... so it seems that you would do the stitch over the edge of the fabric- like... so the needle actually comes down OFF of the fabric on one edge of the stitch, right? If so, then how would I trimming the edges off of it? Should I actually be doing the stitch 5/8 of an inch IN from the edge? If so, then should the 5/8" line be at the inside of the stitch or outside?

Sorry if this sounds confusing or elementary. Any help with deciphering this would be grand. I've done machine sewing before, but never really used any stitch other then the straight running stitch. This is a whole new world to me. :-)

Thanks so very much in advance!!

As it starts to get colder I feel the need to start Christmas gifts. My dad always wants an "stylin' lid" every year with a fold up brim, and I've finally got the perfect pattern down so I thought I'd share.

I'm tired of asking this generally.

I tried to post in people's LJs/Facebooks privatly but in case LJ doesn't deliver the comments:

Can people PLEASE either bring/send back or replace all our videos you borrowed? We miss them and can't afford to replace them ourselves.

We're not pissed, just frustrated.

Thank you.

Write your own local yelp review. [07 Nov 2009|03:11pm]

Average local yelp restaurant review:

So my sisters boyfriend was in town and we decided to go out and have a good time because he is super awesome and she loves him so much. We went all around Seattle and saw the sights, and we splashed in the fountain because she had totally never done that before but we totally did today and it was fun. Soon we got hungry and we went to this local restaurant known for its great food apparently. We had to wait in LINE because the bitchy hostess said something about reservations and a weekend. After we finally got seated after FOREVER because all these people who had called ahead kept showing up, I was TOTALLY BUMMED that they didn't have anything that was vegan, gluten free, fat free, or bike friendly. What kind of place is this? I mean, everyone said it was totally awesome, but when we got there all they had was this fancy menu stuff that I couldn't read, and I totally don't even know what bechemel is anyway. IDK it just seemed not as great as everyone said it was. Two stars.

Ethnic and specialty grocers [07 Nov 2009|12:22pm]

seattle

[martygreene]
I'm looking for recommendations for the best (be it by price or by selection or by your own arbitrary criterion) ethnic and specialty grocers. I am specifically seeking:
-mexican/south american (bonus for anywhere that makes fresh corn tortillas)
-persian (specifically seeking sumac and pomegranate syrup here)
-indian
-kosher (somewhere with a decent selection of israeli imports would be nice, bonus points for a good selection of kosher/israeli wines)
-cheesemonger (preference for somewhere that will cut-to-order by weight, rather than having pre-cut and cello-wrapped cheese)

While proximity to where I'm living is nice (which would be South Everett), I'm willing to make a trip for good quality and well priced foodstuffs.

Man eating blanket! [07 Nov 2009|01:57pm]

[tequiladawn]

My winter hobby, creating all-your-favorite-wornout-jeans-together blankets, has begun. The deal works like this: friends give me all their worn & torn jeans, and when I have enough (plus any jeans I wear out) I make them a quilt out of 'em. Each quilt is customized to it's donor in some way- one has hand embroidered flour-de-leis, one was done in only dark colors, the one pictured has a lot of courdory in it ('cause that's what he gave me). Each also gets custom batting, such as the flour-de-leis one's wool-batted with old army blankets and water-resistant- he takes it camping. It also weighs 26 lbs and took two winters to hand-stitch the hem because it wouldn't fit under my machine. I won't be doin' THAT again, sheesh! I usually badly overestimate how much fabric I'll need, so the blankets end up queen or king sized rather than full sized. I have to admit, I love seeing my friends (and their children in one case) totally cocooned and passed out cold in one of my quilts.
Backing in whatever king sized sheet I've picked up at the local thrift, binding is fleece for the kids and flannel for adults. And truthfully, they're tacked every few inches with embroidery thread, not quilted...

Continuing Thoughts on Racism in Entertainment [07 Nov 2009|12:28pm]

I think it's socially interesting that a bazillion people got bent out of shape and yelled "racism" at the two "black stereotype" transformers but no one batted an eyelash at the leg-humping Italian or the creepy nazi-scientist German 'bots.

I made these new pillow covers to suit my new blue-green living room. I love the way they turned out, even if they're a little loose:

New Pillows

Bea Arthur being absolutely ridiculous. I lose my mind when I turn around and he's just hanging out on the sofa like this:

Nothing to hide.

A bunch of pretty ribbon I scored at the Sally Ann for 3.99... now what to do with it all?

Attn: Greenwood Arsonist [07 Nov 2009|10:57am]

seattle

[wingedelf]
Dear Greenwood Arsonist,

We get it already. You like to set stuff on fire and watch it burn. Spiffy. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

How about this: instead of setting places where people are trying to conduct business on fire, if you're going to torch something else, how about the old McDonalds on Greenwood Ave. which has been sitting vacant for the last couple years? You could burn it down and do the community a favor by ridding us of the eyesore. Besides, I bet there's all sorts of grease and flammable stuff in there which would catch pretty well.

You could even stay inside and watch to see first hand the sort of effect your fires have on buildings from that side. Sounds exciting, doesn't it. Why not give it a try? After all, I think you're the one person I could tell to DIAF and actually fucking mean it literally.

kthxbye

Tile Wax "Emergency" [07 Nov 2009|10:30am]

[ mood | blah ]

So, my mother is kind of flipping out. She needs tile wax to use in our MIL apartment. We found 2 stores that carry it but none are open on weekends and the new tenant is moving in tomorrow. Anyone know where I can find this? Proximity to North Seattle/Greenwood would be a plus, but I suppose I don't have a choice as far as distance. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yesterday's Memorial [07 Nov 2009|08:18am]

seattle

[damashita]

Ok, we are all sad that a Seattle police officer was shot. We are sad for his family, especially.

That being said, what was the use of that huge event yesterday? The cost of that event could have fed, housed, and/or provided health care for quite a number of the citizens here in Seattle that are suffering from the effects of our poor economy. Wouldn't caring for the citizens he protected be more honoring than that spectacle?
